  1.      The artist can correct the sense ratios before the blow of 
  2. new technology has numbed conscious procedures. He can 
  3. correct them before numbness and subliminal groping and 
  4. reaction begin. If this is true, how is it possible to present the 
  5. matter to those who are in a position to do something about 
  6. it? If there were even a remote likelihood of this analysis being 
  7. true, it would warrant a global armistice and period of stock-
  8. taking. If it is true that the artist possesses the means of 
  9. anticipating and avoiding the consequences of technological 
  10. trauma, then what are we to think of the world and 
  11. bureaucracy of ‚Äúart appreciation‚Äù? Would it not seem suddenly 
  12. to be a conspiracy to make the artist a frill, a fribble, or a 
  13. Milltown? If men were able to be convinced that art is precise 
  14. advance knowledge of how to cope with the psychic and social 
  15. consequences of the next technology, would they all become 
  16. artists? Or would they begin a careful translation of new art
